Guidelines Update

Earlier this year, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) published an updated version of its guideline for the management of patients with gout. This guideline features 42 recommendations, including 16 strong recommendations, the most prominent of which concerned indications for and use of pharmacologic urate-lowering therapy (ULT) “for all patients with tophaceous gout, radiographic damage due to gout, or frequent gout flares.” The revised treatment recommendations are supported by new evidence from clinical trials that have concluded since the publication of the last gout treatment guideline in 2012. However, there is a lack of scientific data regarding the safety and efficacy of CBD-based products, as well as uncertainty about their legality, which has led to confusion among patients and healthcare providers. To provide some clarity on these issues, the Arthritis Foundation has released the first guidance for adults with arthritis who are considering trying, or who are already using, CBD to alleviate pain associated with their disease.
